"The Reed Collegium Musicum as we know it had its official start in 1966...John Hancock, as faculty officer, and Michael Halperin, '67, as student officer, applied to the Student Senate for a charter 'to organize a group for the playing of Renaissance and baroque music on campus, especially music written for recorders and other wind instruments'. This charter was granted on September 29, 1966, and the 'Reed Collegium Musicum' became an official campus organization." From: "A history of the Collegium Musicum", by Barbara B.
