Biographical / Historical

Richard H. Sullivan was president of Reed College from 1956 to 1967. Born in Ohio in 1917, Sullivan graduated from Harvard and served in World War II before becoming assistant director of the College Entrance Examination Board and executive vice president and treasurer of the Educational Testing and Service. As president of Reed, Sullivan initiated sabbaticals, hired new faculty, and oversaw construction of new buildings on campus. His attempt to create a graduate school component was unsuccessful. During his tenure, Reed’s student body became more geographically diverse. After Reed, Sullivan became president of the Association of American Colleges and then the Carnegie Corporation.
