Biographical / Historical
The Greek word “Paideia” (Παιδεία) translates roughly to “education” or “learning.” At Reed College, Paideia refers to a week in January, devoted to learning outside the classroom. Students, alumni, staff, and faculty teach classes based on their passions and expertise, from dance, to writing, to lucid dreaming. The first Paideia took place in 1969, though planning began earlier.
