Biographical / Historical
In 1961, U.S. President John F. Kennedy signed an executive order to establish an organization of volunteers, also known as the Peace Corps. Since then, Peace Corps volunteers have served in 141 countries around the world.
In 1966 and 1967, Reed College offered a Peace Corps training program to prepare volunteers for placement in Iran. The 43 or 44 trainees learned Farsi, studied teaching methods and Iranian history and culture, and conducted an independent study. Reed professors taught the trainees.

Abstract
