Scope and Contents

The Binford and Mort records consist of art and photographs used for their publications, with a significant number of photographs of Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. In addition to these photographs, there is a range of correspondence, both professional and personal, along with various over-sized publicity pamphlets and flyers.

Biographical / Historical

Janet Walker Binford (1911-1992) graduated from Reed College in 1936. She married Thomas Peter Binford, owner of Binford and Mort, Publisher of Northwest Books. The firm had its beginnings in 1892 under the name Metropolitan Printing with Peter and Maurice Binford, brothers, starting it in Portland, Oregon. Binford and Mort has a variant spelling of: “Binfords and Mort”.

Abstract

Presented by Janet Walker Binford, the Binford and Mort publishing collection comprises a library of that company's published titles, publicity flyers and lists, and some of the illustrative materials used in their books, particularly photographs illustrating books about Northwest Native Americans. Janet Walker, Reed College class of '36, married Thomas Peter Binford, heir to the Binford and Mort publishing firm started in Portland in 1892 as Metropolitan Printing.
