The Papers consist of pamphlets and newsletters, reprints of biology papers by Helen Stafford, notes on her research projects, along with many slides which range in subject matter from vacation trips she took, to seminars she taught.

Biographical / Historical

Helen A. Stafford was born August 9, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA to Ethel S. and Morton O. Stafford. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Wellesley College in 1944, her MA from Connecticut College in 1948, and her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951. She taught biology at Reed College from 1954-1987.

Stafford served as president of the Phytochemical Society of North America (PSNA), 1977-78, and commissioner of the Committee for Undergraduate Education in Biological Sciences, 1968-71. She was a member of the editorial board of Plant Physiology and an editor of Recent Advances in Phytochemistry. She published Flavonoid Metabolism in 1990, and received the Phytochemistry Pioneer Award in 2008.

Professor Stafford died of complications from Alzheimer’s Disease in Portland, Oregon, on August 12, 2011.

Overview

Professor Helen Stafford (1922-2011) was the first female biology professor at Reed, teaching from 1954 to 1987. She was active in the Phytochemical Society of North America and received their Phytochemistry Pioneer Award in 2008. Her book Flavonoid Metabolism (1990) was well-received, and she worked as editor and committee member in her professional field. Her Papers contain her article reprints, pamphlets, newsletters, notes on research projects, and photographic images.
