Biographical / Historical
Richard F. Scholz served as the second president of Reed College from 1921 to 1924. Scholz received his Bachelors at the University of Washington and a Masters in Classics in 1902. In 1903, he received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University. He taught at the University of Washington and in the University of California system. He sought out a Rockefeller grant, which boosted the school’s endowment.
At Reed, Scholz established a core curriculum by instituting required courses. He created four academic divisions, Literature and Language, History and Social Science, Mathematics and Natural Science, and Philosophy, Religion, and Psychology, which lasted until the 1940s.
Scholz died in 1924, during his presidency.
