Alexander Alexandrovich Goldenweiser papers
Scope and Contents
The Alexander Goldenweiser Papers consist of his Iroquois Field Notes, transcriptions of Iroquois, lists of Iroquois Chiefs, lists of Iroquois botanical terms, and genealogical and clan name lists. In addition, the Papers include Goldenweiser’s notes from classes he 2 attended at Columbia University with Franz Boas, along with drafts of scholarly papers and books, many of his published works, including illustrations, reviews of works done by others, as well as correspondence from Andrew Lang, Vladimir Iokhel’son [aka Valdemar Johchelson], and R.R. Marett. The Papers also include catalog cards of Goldenweiser’s library at the time of his death.

Biographical / Historical
Alexander Alexandrovich Goldenweiser was born in Kiev, Russia in 1880. He emigrated to the United States in 1900. He studied Anthropology under Franz Boas, and earned his AB degree from Columbia University in 1902, his AM degree in 1904 and his PhD, in 1910.
In addition to many books, articles and reviews, Professor Goldenweiser taught at the following institutions: Lecturer, Anthropology, Colombia University, 1910-1919; New School for Social Research, NY, 1919-1926; Lecturer, Rand School for Social Science, 1915-1929; Professor, Thought and Culture, Oregon State System of Higher Education, Portland Extension, 1930-1938. Visiting Professor, University of Wisconsin, 1937-1938. Professor, University of Washington, 1923. Visiting Professor of Sociology, Reed College, 1933-1939.
He died on July 6, 1940 in Portland, Oregon.

Abstract
Alexander Alexandrovich Goldenweiser (1880-1940) held the post of Visiting Professor of Sociology at Reed from 1933 to 1939. He was an anthropologist, and the collection consists mainly of papers concerning his Iroquois Field Notes: transcriptions of Iroquois, lists of Iroquois Chiefs, lists of Iroquois botanical terms, and genealogical and clan name lists. The papers also include his notes from classes taught by Franz Boas at Columbia University, drafts of scholarly papers and books, reviews, and some correspondence.
