Biographical / Historical

David Reed is known as a conceptual and visual artist, a colorist of large brushstrokes, brilliant colors, and long abstract paintings on canvas. Besides being a fine arts painter, he is an installation sculptor, a video artist, a lecturer, and an exhibition curator. After a childhood in California, David Reed graduated from Reed College in 1968 and moved to New York City where he still resides. He and his work have been significant and present in the New York art scene from the early 1970s through to the present. Reed maintained a good relationship with Charles Rhyne, one of his professors at Reed College, and was very close to Willard Midgette, an artist-in-residence and associate professor of art at Reed from 1963 to 1971.

Abstract

David Reed is a conceptual and visual artist, a colorist of large brushstrokes, brilliant colors, and long abstract paintings on canvas. He graduated from Reed College in 1968 and moved to New York City, where he and his work have had a significant presence to the present. This collection includes biographical information and the correspondence, paperwork, images, and publicity surrounding the exhibit of his work mounted by Professor Charles Rhyne at Reed in 1975.

The David Reed Papers are a gift from Barbara Rhyne from the files of Charles Rhyne, art professor at Reed 1960-1997.
