Biographical / Historical
Doris Bailey Murphy was born in Portland, Oregon, March 1, 1910. She graduated from Reed College in 1938, moving to San Francisco where she became a welfare worker with the Traveler’s Aid Society. She married Joseph Murphy in San Francisco in 1948. They moved to Occidental in 1958. She was a senior psychiatric social worker from 1958 to 1963 and district office supervisor with the state Department of Mental Health from 1963 to 1974. Doris worked as a therapist with the Family Service Agency until she was 90. She died March 21, 2011 at her home in Occidental, CA at the age of 101.

Doris Bailey Murphy (1910-2011) graduated from Reed College in 1938, becoming a welfare worker in San Francisco soon after. She was a senior psychiatric social worker, supervisor, and therapist over her career. Murphy’s Papers include diaries, college papers, and her thesis.
