Biographical / Historical
Gilbert Schneider was a linguist and missionary who lived and worked in Cameroon for 16 years. Born in Dallas, Oregon, in 1920, Schneider received his BA from the University of Rochester in 1944 before attending Rochester Baptist Seminary and the Hartford Seminary Foundation, where he received his MA. He married Mildred Voth, who accompanied Schneider to Cameroon in 1946. The Schneiders lived in Cameroon for 16 years with their children. In 1966, Schneider received a PhD in linguistics from the Hartford Seminary Foundation and went on to teach at Ohio State. Schneider died in 1999. [From African Arts 1 Vol. 33 (2000).]

Abstract
Gilbert Schneider was a linguist and missionary who lived and worked in Cameroon for 16 years. The Gilbert D. Schneider papers contain notes, publications by Schneider, photos, and books and articles concerning Cameroon, linguistics, and other topics relating to Schneider's research. "Focus on Black," a folio volume of Schneider's photos, is housed in rare books, separately from the rest of the papers.
