This collection contains the presidential files of E.B. MacNaughton, Reed College president from 1948-1952. The files contain information regarding budgets, curriculum, investments, a 1937 letter from Herbert Hoover, and other documents relating to Reed College and its history.

Biographical / Historical

E. B. (Ernest Boyd) MacNaughton was president of Reed College from 1948 to 1952. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1880, MacNaughton went on to receive a bachelors in architecture and structural engineering at MIT (1902). After graduation, he opened a firm in Portland. He was was President of the Oregonian and served on the Board of the First National Bank. He maintained those positions during his presidency at Reed. MacNaughton was one of the original members of Reed’s Board of Regents in 1919. Later, he joined the Board of Trustees. As president, he focused on Reed’s finances. He sought out gifts and donations for the college, increased faculty salaries, and developed relationships with Portland businesses. MacNaughton was a member of the ACLU of Oregon and, for a time, Chairman of the ACLU National Advisory Council. During WWII, he was named first president of Nippon Society of Oregon (later known as the Japan-America Society of Oregon). [Information from the “Presidents of Reed” webpage and the ACLU]
