Abstract

Donna Frances Davis (1887-1976) was an profesor, printmaker, and bookplate designer based in San Mateo, CA. This collection consists of Davis's bookplate designs, drawings, correspondence, and over 1000 plates from bookplate artists around the country.

Biographical / Historical

Donna Frances Davis (1887-1976) was born on May 23, 1887 in Waterbury, CT. Davis studied at the Boston Museum School, the Mark Hopkins Institute (1905-06), UC Berkeley, and the California College of Arts and Crafts where she received a Bachelor’s of Art degree. She taught art in the public schools in the San Francisco Bay area and headed the art department at the College of San Mateo for 26 years. A collector as well as artist, Davis gathered a large colection of bookplates from artists in Califoria and around the country. She died in Pacific Grove, CA on October 19th, 1976.
