Notes from FileMaker 'Note' field: "I first decided to put the report together to chronicle activities during my two years as Chair of the American Studies Committee, but it grew into something more elaborate. I solicited the memos on the history of American Studies at Reed from John Tomsich and Lisa Steinman because I had repeatedly referred people to them when I'd been asked about the origins of the major. The overview of the field is a more succinct version of talks I've given on several occasions, again in response to queries to define 'American Studies'".
