Notes from FileMaker 'Note' field: "Brief History of the Dance Department: ...Until 1963, dance classes were offered through the Physical Education and Recreation Department. Kay Lee, Director of the Play Box Players in Portland, and Trisha Brown, noted avant-garde choreographer, have at one time been instructors in Dance at Reed. In the 1950's and 1960's, Merce Cunningham, Charles Weidman, Erick Hawkins, Anna Sokolov, and Jean Erdman all performed and/or offered classes at Reed. In 1963 the Dance Department, directed by Elfi Hosman, became affiliated with the Division of the Arts, and academic credit was given for courses in Dance 110 and 210. By 1965, the College recognized a need for a higher level course; and in March of that year the faculty approved Ms. Hosman's proposed Dance 310 course. In the Spring of 1968, because of physical injury, Ms. Hosman resigned; and Reed appointed Ms. Judy Massee as temporary director...In 1970 the Division of the Arts and the faculty approved Dance 481 and 482, Independent Study...The faculty approved [a combined] Dance/Theatre Major in November, 1973."
